The Transparency
Report

Story
People
Goods
Partners

Within this report you will find a not at all brief exploration of who we are, why we are, how we are, where we are, and what we are. As things change and shift, we will reflect that here — we’ve also included a time stamp so you always know when this report was last updated.

👋 Avatars of people, brands, and products are clickable, unless they’ve asked not to be.

In full transparency, we promised we would have this report finished by October 2020. We recognize that it's July ... of 2021. Needless to say, going through this process took way longer than we anticipated. If we didn’t call that out, then what’s the point of even doing this? With all of that said, here it is. We hope you like it.

WHY ANOTHER ROOM?

You know that feeling you get when you're stoned? It's almost like you're discovering things for the first time. All of the sudden food tastes tastier, thoughts are deeper, everything is lighter, and somehow the clouds look fluffier. It feels like you've entered Another Room. Welcome, we're glad you're here.

Avatars of the founding team of Another Room

WHO MAKES IT HAPPEN

Once upon a time there were 2 stoners (Chloe + Shafeez) and –––––. With backgrounds in Design, Fashion, PR, UX, and Product Strategy, these 3 built the foundation of Another Room. While it's mainly Chloe + Shafeez running the show these days, ––––– makes star–studded appearances when he can.

Why anonymous in a transparency report?
Are you wondering why there is a bold, not at all transparent, redacted block through one of the members of our founding team? The man (myth and legend) who designed the branding for Another Room prefers anonymity with his work. If that changes, we'll be sure to make a large, colourful, transparent reveal. Until then, mystery remains.

Meet the founding team

MADE IN CANADA

Just like poutine, Another Room was created in Canada. Our team has run remotely since day one — from Kelowna, to Vancouver, all the way to Toronto. Shout out to Slack, Notion, FaceTime, and Miro for being our office.

Acknowledgements
Another Room acknowledges that our team works on the traditional territory of many nations including: Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, the Wendat peoples, the unceded territory of the Syilx (Okanagan) Peoples, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

We pinky promise GIF

TOKEN BELIEFS SINCE DAY 1

Our pinky promises. To ourselves, and to you.

We’ve always been self-funded
To build what we wanted and how we wanted, we funded it ourselves. From the very first travel kit, to this exact second, Another Room has been funded solely by its owners. Will it always be like this? We'll update you if things change.

We are in draft mode
Never not iterating is the mood. We will always be experimenting, testing, refining, learning, and growing. This allows us to ensure we are agile in the ways we focus on the needs of our customers, and the needs of weed. Does this mean we make mistakes? Definitely. Does it also mean we get to learn everyday? Absolutely. Shafeez likes to refer to these lessons as iOS updates.

We think fun is better with function
We are committed to building things that fit into the common situations that stoners find themselves in. Lost lighters, dry mouth, red eyes, and weed smelling worries. By the same token, we want to create stuff that's fun, and delightful. Like the feeling of being stoned. Fun and function are at the core of everything we do.

A TIMELINE OF OUR EXISTENCE

From the days before we existed until now, here are some of the key moments that we can still remember.

Before we existed

Chloe and Shafeez meet on Tinder in Vancouver.
Chloe and Shafeez decide to be friends and move to Toronto. Lol.
The idea is born — not as travel kits just yet, but as a weed-focused hospitality company.
Chloe tells Shafeez about said idea, and realizes she wants to build Another Room with him.
Chloe delivers Shafeez the formal elevator pitch, and he’s very much into it.
Shafeez says that he'd want to focus on product, ux/ui, and stresses the importance of getting someone who is a brand master.
Enter –––––, the man, the myth, the brand master. Chloe pitches ––––– the idea.
Chloe realizes Toronto isn't her cup of tea, and talks to Shafeez about running the company remotely.
Chloe asks Shafeez and Dorph to come on board for equity in the company.
Shafeez sets up how we can work remotely (major thanks to Phuse).
Chloe goes through accelerator program in Kelowna and decides to self fund.
Another Room does a grown up thing and incorporates.
We go through the legal process of building out our weed-focused hospitality dreams and realize the world isn't ready, legally.
We decide to build out The Travel Kit. Pivot #1 of 32487394.
We begin building the first version of our website, and onboard our first freelance developer.

2019

Another Room launches The Travel Kit (fun fact, the first order was Kash, the creator of Jointlockers).
We get our first stockist, LAPCG in LA.
We make a second attempt to revive our weed-focused hospitality dreams, and realize for the second time, it's not going to work yet.
We work with Local MFG to create The Smell Proof Pouch.
We pitch Kash to make the first white-labelled Jointlocker.
We begin developing the editorial section on our site.
Kash comes on board to make the HI Jointlocker.
Our supplier discontinues our bags, we take this as a sign to rethink our bags.
Chloe tries to a design bag from scratch with zero product design experience for the first, and last time.
First team trip in LA for a photoshoot, tacos, and to get stoned together.
New bag, custom Jointlocker, smell proof pouch, and wearables launch on the second version of our website. (LOL to thinking it makes sense to launch 4 new products at once)
For the second version of our site, we thought it would be fun to have people enter our site through doors ... it was not fun, or functional. See token beliefs.
We put on our first IRL event, The Discover Different Doors Magic Show.
We launch our first co-branded product, a chapstick with Dedcool.
We have our first paid for advertising in Gossamer Mag.
We discontinue Chloe's bag.

2020

We bring on Alex Beebe as a freelance designer (the wizard behind the hamburger grinder branding, and many of our illustrations).
3rd version of our website launches sans doors (third times the charm).
We launch an online zine! Link here.
We become the exclusive retailer of Jointlockers.
We create a partnership with Cannabis Amnesty to create a donation portal on our site.
We launch The Hamburger Grinder and Combo #3 in partnership with Superette.
We launch our second co-branded product — Flip flops with Tidal.
We get kicked off our payment processor, drug paraphernalia problems, and can only accept e-transfers and PayPal.
Our freelance developer Kevin gets hired by Shopify (lol) so now we search for a new developer.
We onboard with Moneris, our third-party payment processor.
We have our second IRL event, Another Burger Joint.
Chloe asks Shafeez to come on as Co-Founder.
We recruit and build out The Feedback Department.
Shafeez onboards M.K. as a freelance developer — she's quite FABULOUS.

2021

We launch new doobs tubes — In purple-y and red.
We release v1 of our Transparency Report OH HEY THERE.
We launch The Prototype Shop along with many updates to our website and overall customer experience.
